Cambridgeshire Police teamed together with the Border Agency, Revenue and Customs and the DVLA to conduct Operation Surf in Wisbech today

Following the success of a similar initiative in St Neots recently, the multi agency approach certainly got results with sixteen people arrested for offences such as having no insurance or carrying drugs.

Fifty more people received fines for more minor offences such as failing to wear a seatbelt, using a mobile phone whilst driving and having no road tax. Activity continues this evening with licensing checks throughout the town.

Residents in the area have been supported through the day with advice about beating crime.

What do you think of this initiative? We think it's good to see the police and other agencies taking a proactive approach and surprising that SO many people got caught out doing really stupid things like using a mobile whilst driving

Opinion is divided about the long term impact however, and local resident George Ferrer commented that "It seems like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut when all they've done is disrupt people going about their business today and catch people not wearing their seatbelts. It's hardly Crimewatch is it?"

So...what do you think? Are you glad to see your tax pounds being spent on a Zero Tolerance approach, even if it is just for one day?

I think that these issues should be addressed . only the people who are ignoring the laws have a problem with the police enforcing these issues . Firstly when on their mobiles some drivers are totallt oblivious to other road users , secondly a lot of deaths and accidents are caused bey mobile phone using drivers .seat belts do save lives , therefore they should been worn . why do some people whine when they refuse to obey the law the rest of us have to !!
