Wow Pound Hits Wisbech!
By Laura_Spodula | Friday, August 20, 2010, 15:30
This shop, Wow Pound, is now where the 90p Store used to be. That was quick to step into the grave! Its been redecorated with white on the outside and small signage with the name Wow Pound.
Will anyone be queuing up to go in it or do you think it will go down the same route as the 90p Store and the countless other discount shops that have been in its place?

Username7....I am in total agreement with your suggestions....utopian or not!!!!
Personally i don`t think that in the 21st century these suggestions should seem very radical to anyone...though I bet i`m wrong!!!!!!!!

ReportI feel the issue is not about 'how long will the WOW Pound shop last' but more, how long will trade last in the market place & town centre?
Once the new out of town development has been integrated into our small market town community, how will the small traders in the town centre cope?
How many more penny stores can Wisbech accommodate?
Its really in a sad state...
The issue we need to address NOW before the cinema site has been completed, is - : How do we fill the additional shops that will be emptied due to the redevelopment & once we admit the can't be filled, what alternative functions can these properties be used for?
Can these empty buildings not be redeveloped into high quality accommodation. High value properties will bring in potentially high earning people that will bring money into the town.
The Georgian & Victorian buildings in the market place could then support restaurants & leisure facilities that the whole town can be proud of.
I know its a little utopian to think that Wisbech could carry high quality establishments but we need to think ahead now and bite the bullet that has Wisbech written all over it.
March town centre has yet another building due to be developed into a Pub/Restaurant. It seems that March is stealing the 'Capital of the Fens' thunder once again.
If you talk to people outside of Wisbech, most will say, "I won't go into Wisbech town centre in the evening if you paid me?"
Why is this? Is it the facilities? Is it the people of Wisbech? or is it that Wisbech just has a bad reputation? and if so, is the bad-rep deserved?
Which ever one of these issues (or combination of all issues) is causing the problem, we need to change the perception of people who just won't come to Wisbech?
Wisbech is a market town, our 'tradtional' market has shrunk to half of its former size, the shops mainly sell low cost products (apart from the obvious, Argos). How can this be rectified...
Answer: It can't - again the function of the town centre must adapt to the future needs of its people.
We have so many supermarkets scattered around the town that its hard to see why people still visit the town centre.
WE NEED TO RE-EVALUATE THE PURPOSE OF THE MARKET PLACE, TO ESTABLISH ITS FUNCTION FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS. We should not be side tracked by whether we can park our cars there but define a cumulative, long term social solution.
Personally, I see the town centre as a place where people can meet and follow their leisure pursuits, be-it shopping, eating, drinking, playing social games, creating art & design, helping those less fortunate, increasing awareness of local issues and educating all who need it. In general building a better Wisbech - A Social Hub to benefit all.
I know we sort of provide all these things now, but its low quality & has no cohesion. We need investment from forward thinking future based National & mutli-national companies.
Can Wisbech become a digital hub for East Anglia - can we not offer incentives to draw-in internet based companies.
The future is Digital Leisure... we need to grasp this concept, run with it and forge a new identity for Wisbech.
How do we achieve this?
Rant over... nuff said.
