What Are Wisbech's Best Pubs?
By Laura_Spodula | Friday, October 01, 2010, 01:06
Who goes out on a night here in Wisbech or knows anyone that
does? We here at Wisbech People remembered a poll we did earlier in the year
about which pubs we liked the best. Then though we chose a pub from each area
but now I’m focussing solely on Wisbech. There are plenty of pubs in and around
Wisbech, some good, some perhaps not so good. Well we want to hear your views
on what you think of the pubs in our town and what you would do to improve
them.
The Wheatsheaf Inn is what I will begin with because it is the first place I would chose to go. I would say this pub
is what would bring in the most perhaps diverse community because it has the
food in the day time and the nightlife in the evening. In the evening it may
bring in a younger group of people but nevertheless whenever I have been there
there has always been a variety of people. The toilets upstairs I think are a
great asset because there are so many of them and they have always been clean
whenever I have visited. Although someone was stuck inside a cubicle once!
The Case comes in a close second in my choices because it is
more like the Wheatsheaf Inn. I have
visited this pub in the day time only with friends and I thought the atmosphere
was friendly. The food served was delicious and not too pricey and the drinks
were the same. Many people I know have met there at night for a few drinks and say
that they like it so I will go on their recommendation and also recommend it to
you.
My third choice would be the Duke’s Head. My experience of
this pub was on a quiet evening with a friend. At this time there were not many
customers which at times felt uncomfortable because there were no other
customers for the barmaid to focus on. It was a nice pub however and the prices
were fair, so if you haven’t been in there yet then I would definitely give it
a go.
The Red Lion comes in fourth for me because of its size more
than anything else. I felt that inside at the bar there is not that much room
to manoeuvre if there are a few people in there. On the upside strangely though
there are always plenty of people in there and it is a thriving business. The
atmosphere is friendly and everyone is welcoming. There is a restaurant area
which serves great food, I have been there on two or three occasions and could
never fault it. I would say the car park is in an unfortunate place and not
very big. The entrance to which is on a bend and is sometimes tricky to get out
of. Once in and out though this pub is definitely worth a look.
My fifth and final choice is out of town and I have a reason
for this; I have not visited many other pubs in Wisbech and the ones I have
visited I certainly would not put in my top 5! So in light of this I have
chosen Oliver Twist all the way over in Guyhirn. It’s still a surrounding village after all! Yes I know it is more of a place to eat than drink but I couldn't leave it out. The reason I have chosen this is because I think the food here is fantastic! I have
visited this place on several occasions and the food, atmosphere and service
has always been top notch! I could not recommend this place any higher, so if
you haven’t tried it yet please do so soon!
Now I have told you in Wisbech where I would go to drink or
eat, now I would like to hear from you. Do you agree or disagree with my
choices? What do you think makes a good
pub? What do you think pubs in the area could do to improve? We really would
like to hear from you!

We use the Wheatsheaf and Case alot mainly because its handy for town and the prices are good But they are not a pub in the old fashioned way, ,,, for a traditional pub we like the Loco and our other favorite is Trendy Mendis which is more of a club But the food is great and there is entertainment Fridays and Saturdays and its a great place to have a party , Steve and Geoff are so friendly but professional ,
Not so many years ago We used to do pub crawls along the Lynn Rd and having one in the Clarkson, Bowling Green, Rutland arms and the Tap, the we hopped over to the wisbech Arms , then Kings head ,the Angel and the Spread Eagle before ending up the Market inn all in one long day

ReportSorry, many of my generation have stopped going out in Wisbech. Over the last 25 years, Wisbech as a social centre has become a joke. With the advent of plastic-supermarket style pubs and the closure of our more intimate public houses & hostelries, I feel the soul of our once vibrant town has been lost. Supermarkets (Tesco & Asda etc... ) have killed this industry with low cost, low quality alchohol, making it pointless to sit and have a beer with friends when human nature slowly drifts towards 'the cheaper option' & having a beer at home...................................................................................................................................................... The choice of pubs has reduced by half since I was a lad & I'd expect this ratio to happen again when my kids are older. I'd also have to add its not the place your in, but the people your with that make a good night out. Wisbech could be a fun place to have a beer if it wasn't for the bad reputation. Most of the people from Wisbech I know, visit March (more relaxed) or Peterborough (more choice).................................................................................................................................
I did like the White Lion, due to its excellent beer-garden, The Kings Head, for its river view, The Queens Hotel, (now a hostel?) for its variety of out of town customers, Red Lion ( for its little beer festival).
