Wisbech Taxi Rank Is To Stay Put In The HorseFair For Now
By Wisbech People | Friday, May 28, 2010, 22:58
The move to relocate the taxi rank from the Horsefair to an area near The Case has always been a touchy subject with all Wisbech citizens that both do and do not use the service. The relocation would have cost £75,000 but has now been abandoned for more reasonable propositions to do with traffic safety in the same area.
Politics was believed to be involved with it as a loss of seats for Conservatives on the Council would have thought to be a result if the petition of over 1000 signatures was ignored. Luckily it was not and the taxi rank stays where it is, for now.
Is this story over with?

I very much hope it had nothing to do with whether people would "lose seats" or not.
A petition represents the voice of the public and it should command attention for that reason alone.
This does not mean that a petition is always right. The public should be given all the facts so they can make an informed decision. If there is a damning safety report then it should be published publicly for people to see.
While its nice of the public to support the taxi drivers and it shows generosity and community spirit - if (God forbid) somebody were knocked down tomorrow the mood would change quite quickly.
I've mostly taken the view that the public have judged this one right - but its not as clear cut as it appears and not all taxi drivers share the same opinion. I watch the situation with some concern.
Unfortunately, I can't really get into it any more as I'll be accused of "sour grapes". Which isn't really true, but is an easy accusation to make.

ReportI would like to think so,but i very much doubt it.They say its a safety issue because of the buses that come and go and all the taxis that are there,i havent while ive been there seen any drivers driving without due care and attention.Well done all concerned!
