Wisbech Players present 'Calendar Girls', a very British story with a very British heart. 'Calendar Girls' is based on an uplifting and very inspiring true story that is quirky, poignant and hilarious.
A group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire Women's Institute group, spark a global phenomenon by persuading one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference. As interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves revealing more than they'd ever planned.
Based on the 2003 film starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, the play was adapted for the stage by Tim Firth and first produced in 2008 with a cast that included Lynda Bellingham, Patricia Hodge and Siân Phillips. Although it has been a constant touring attraction ever since, it has only just been made available to amateur groups – meaning that Wisbech Players will be among the first drama groups in the country to perform the play when its production, directed by Barbara Mews, opens at The Angles Theatre on October 12, 2012.
