I too have lived here all my life, and what a difference the town looks today. So many shops have come and gone and made way for Banks and Estate Agents. Why banks puzzles me as the wages in this area are awful, and i wouldnt think people have money to leave in there for long anyway.I can remember a time when you walked into town talked and said hello to everybody, not anymore though. The friendliness has definately gone out of the town and i dont know why, does anybody else?
Its the modern world we have created im afraid, i was born in London and the decline in human standards started there decades ago, one of the reasons i moved here was because of the people and way of life was so much better. Wisbech has now caught up there is no respect for any values that once were paramount. Will it change? I doubt it. Unemplyment goes hand in hand with decline people give up and think why should i care it wont find me a job, i cant afford to buy anything, shops close and so on. Am i building to much of a grim picture?
After reading these post i think i might just move out of my high rise into a bungalow to be safer....Does anybody want to buy a gas oven maybe safer for my health to switch that to electric ...And edna_w i tried to say hello to you the other day,i spent a good 10mins in wisbech park talking to some flowers..thinking is that edna_w..My time is very precious and to lose that much was daylight shrubbery..
People, we really don't need to be so relentlessly gloomy! Yes, the ongoing recession has hurt our town - like many market towns. Yes, there are issues and problems that must be resolved - as there are in many places. But its interesting that when newcomers arrive they notice (and comment on) the good aspects that those of us who live here have become so "used to" that we no longer see. For example, though our town center is having a tough time it is still surviving - this is not true everywhere. Indeed, business has been fairly brisk just lately. Our library has benefitted from fantastic work and is now certifiably awesome. We are surrounded by incredibly architecture (when its not on fire.) We have the powerful Nene surging through our town and the impressive port area that is part of that. We have absolutely MASSES of free parking all over town - a situation that many envy greatly I promise you (and watch out for people trying to sneakily take that away in future!) We have a wonderful new play area going into Waterlees (yes, its controversial, but have you seen the plans? It looks amazing!) We have great events and festivals like the Youth Council's Rock Concert and the Rose Fair. We are surrounded by incredible fen landscapes upon which the sun sets in an incredibly blaze of glory and where it feels like you can see the whole world! And - we have the best Town Park - BY FAR - in the entire county of Cambridgeshire, IMHO. I'm not saying everything is perfect. But anybody who thinks we live in some kind of hellhole has (a) not travelled very much and (b) is failing to see the woods for the trees. This is our home! Where it's bad - pitch in to improve it! Where it's good - be proud!

I agree Steve I have seen much worse places to live in the UK and in many parts of the world.
Wisbech although I have moaned about it quite a few times is not the dreariest place to live, there are people actively seeking to make the town prosper during this hard time.
The rose fair will bring out alot of creative and inspiring energy for children and adults alike and events like this bring the town together.
The rock festival was very well put together (apart from the weather) it was a very good day and again children, teens and adults were all mingling together.
There are things that are wrong with the town some anti-social behaviour (mostly due to excess drink and bored kids) but with things that the council is putting forward this should hopefully curb the levels.
The town will eventually start to fit back together when the recession is over and people have confidence in employment to start spending their cash again.
I also say be proud of where you live/where you come from.

ReportYou are so correct a little moment of kindness is all it takes just holding a door open to a smile also show a bit of community spirit kindness,i lost count the amount of times i have picked litter out of the flower troughs on freedom bridge and placed them in the nearby bin....NOTHING WINDS ME UP MORE THAN LITTER DROPPING
Without wanting to get onto a political soapbox here - Bubbleboy you have hit the nail on the head. We have grown so used to "the state" doing everything for us (and charging us for it) that when a problem arises the first response seems to be to "demand something is done" or "assert our rights". If, instead, we just get off our backsides and pitch in - many hands make light work. And this frees up resources for the things that really do need doing and the people who really do need help. A little bit of kindness here, some picking up litter there - and suddenly a nice environment and a strong community surrounds you.

I agree with the litter dropping, absolutely cannot stand it, one of my pet hates!!! However what I don't do is pick up other people's rubbish that they have dropped. For instance, I saw a mum tell her young child to put his drink carton in the bin because he put it on the floor. Turning the corner where there was a bin he put it on top of the atm machine opposite the bin where it fell off right in front of me. I could have put it in the bin but I didn't. I probably should have because it takes everyone to make a town clean and worth going to see.
I agree the library does look fantastic now. The exterior looks very modern and welcoming and everything inside is just as good. I was very impressed when I went on a tour of it.
I think the problem people are having is that any changes like the library are quite few and far between and are just bored and tired of Wisbech looking and feeling the way it does. Especially with the recent fires. Hopefully Wisbech will continue to grow and redevelopment is successful.

ReportLaura somebody has to do it,..the secret to getting anybody to do anything in life is not to preach to them, you have to get down to their level where they currently are and try not reach for them but to look them in the eyes see what makes them tick, if you pick up some litter people will see you do it and and the subconscious takes over ,somebody picking up somebody else's litter will stay with them more than a 1000 leaflets in the local press or signs strapped to lamp posts..Next time you go up town just stop and stare up into space watch what people do they we stare up to see what you are looking at before anybody asks you what you are staring at...:)..
I am reminded of a time I was with a group of litter-pckers cleaning up a riverbank and some young lads, laughing and messing about, deliberately dropped a crisp bag on an area we'd already cleared. The group just stopped and looked at them. The lads had the decency to look embarrassed and one of the picked up the bag and put it in our big. "Sorry!" he said. Good work is infectious - surprisingly so.

ReportI always have the conundrum with litter can you legally place a empty drinks can in somebody's recycle bin if its on the public highway/footpath,Another thing who is legally responsible for pot holes if they are in a dropped kerb somebody has paid the highway agency to lower, things like this keep me awake at night lol
If things like that keep you awake at night BubbleBoy - then you should probably think about standing to be a councillor next time...

I agree SteveTierney there are many a pleasant things in Wisbech, But many more that are unpleasant!! Laura_Spodula, I would never pick somebody else's litter up But I would encourage people to pick up their own litter and never litter myself. The Library is looking very Hi-Tech, But i am talking more about the things we see outside. There are parts of Wisbech that are very rough. Everything but the flowers, park etc need updating. Everything looks abit plain and old. I also think we didnt make use of the things we have got. For example, The Boathouse is very Pretty and Modern, But it is not being used and is in the wrong place, they could have placed that near the pretty park or the roundabouts. Another thing is the Harbour, around it is nice But where the boats are docked looks very shabby, Grey, Boring, Old and Plain once again. The Boats are looking very shabby to, I know we cant change that, But the owners of the Boats could have some respect. Ive noticed they are never taken out to be used, whats the point in having a boat and not using it, it just makes the bridge look shabby. Everything just needs a scrub, some more colourful paint and for people to not make things dirty, graffitied. Although we do not suffer from bad graffiti, The dirt around wisbech has formed a colony which looks worse than graffitti. The Old market, yeah nice old buildings, But arent we getting bored of that, Yeah weve had those lovely old fashioned buildings for abit, But isnt it timed to upgrade. we could demolish all of that and build a nice modern building with an 'actual' use instead of the boathouse which is empty (probably because its in the wrong place). I'm not suggesting that we do do something so major as that, But it might help to scrub some of the walls pavements!! :) x

I agree with pretty much all of that apart from modernising the old buildings, they are historic and perhaps they just need maintaining better, generally everything needs to be looked after better and spruced up a bit.

Visitors to our town often comment on how wonderful it looks - particularly citing the 'old buildings'. The scene along the river Nene (burnt shells notwithstanding) is considered a classical and incredible Georgian display by many. So sorry GeorgiaNS but I really have to disagree with you. You say "old and plain" - their being old is what makes them special and plain our buildings are certainly not. There are some rough areas in Wisbech, yes, but every town has those areas - some much worse or much larger than ours.
By Cllr Steve Tierney at 09:44 on 28/06/10
ReportLet me get this right GeorgiaNS you would not pick up an discarded empty glass bottle near a local junior school school and place it into a bin before some 9 year old smashed it !.As for what you are going on about in the second part from 'Everything just needs a scrub. that is the funniest thing i have read this year' :)
I understand that you cant demolish old buildings and i understand historic values, But i think that modern buildings should not be built around Historic Buildings. And i think that they need to be maintained better!! You have to agree that our town is especially rough and the only people who dont agree are the people who make it rough. and BubbleBoy, that didnt make any sense soo Shut up :) x

ReportBit more sober today so will try to make more sense ?? the boathouse has 33 small office units, last time i looked 15 of these were filled mainly by small internet based companies in this current financial climate think that is not to bad as for being in the wrong place, don't quite see how it could be anywhere near wisbech park or the roundabout ..point two the fact there is a massive building programme going on down chase street maybe this is the reason for all the dirt and dust !.you also typed that you think that new buildings should not be built next to old buildings..i take it you have never been to London.. i suggest you move to Milton Keynes if you don't like seeing that..as for the boats not being used surely the main point of a harbour is to store boats...
