Community Spirit Alive & Kicking in the Villages

We moved out of Wisbech to Tydd St. Giles about 18 months ago & more recently my Mother-in-Law has moved to Tydd St. Mary from Downham Market. Tydd St. Giles is a pretty, quiet village & as we don't really know anyone in the village, we haven't really got involved in the community.

We were very pleasantly surprised on Halloween night when we took our son out trick or treating with two of his friends to find that both villages wholly embraced the night in a way I have never seen before (having lived in towns or cities all my life). The atmosphere was akin to a street party with children of all ages out & a good number of adults freely entering into the spirit of the occasion.
Houses were elaborately decorated & children made to feel most welcome & fiiled with sweets! Special mentions must go to the man who crept up on the children with a pretend axe whilst they were waiting at his front door to give them a taste of his own medicine & the people who entered into the spirit of the occaison by dressing up themselves.
It was so busy in Tydd Sy Mary that my Mother-in-Law, Iris, ran out of sweets, despite her having sent her husband Terry to the local shop...twice & ended up giving all the children 10p peices as they knocked on the door. I bet shes even more popular next year!!
It was a fun evening & makes us feel really good about having moved here & made us determined to get more involved in the community.
