Cambridgeshire Police unleash day of action in Wisbech

Cambridgeshire Police unleashed a day of action in Wisbech last week as vehicles were seized, shop keepers fined for employing illegal workers and youngsters sent back to school for playing truant.

Police teamed up with a number of partner agencies in the latest high impact day on Friday, June 17.

Patrols throughout the day resulted in a number of positive arrests, while drunk people were being moved on, five youngsters were caught truanting, a person was caught in breach of his ASBO, nine untaxed vehicles were clamped and two people were cautioned for being drunk in charge of young children.

Elsewhere two business owners were fined £5,000 after they were caught employing illegal immigrants. UK Border Agency officers arrested one worker and two more are being investigated.

Working with Trading Standards, officers seized £800 worth of cigarettes being traded illegally from the rear of a van and issued a £500 fine, they also identified potential unpaid duty on a large number of cases of beer, which may still be seized, and seized 50 cases of counterfeit vodka.

The Community Payback Team was also prominent during the day, with convicted offenders cleaning up graffiti and general mess from across the town.

An ANPR operation led to 11 vehicles being stopped, four of which were seized, and one person was arrested. A weapon and a quantity of drugs were seized from vehicles and officers issued a number of penalty tickets for a variety of motoring offences.

The Crime Buster bus was also in use and officers and other partners handed out crime prevention advice to residents.

Chief Superintendent Karen Daber said: "I am keen to ensure that we do everything to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour in the Wisbech area and will continue to work with all enforcement agencies."

Inspector Andy Sullivan, who organised the day, added: "This was a worthwhile and productive exercise and I would like to thank our partner agencies, colleagues and the public for their assistance.
