2012 - Olympic Year

I know it's really trendy to knock the forthcoming Olympics or feel that it has nothing to do with Wisbech but I am excited fit to bust.

I'll hold my hands up, I am a sports nut through & through but I can't understand why more people aren't as excited as I am.  When I mention it it seems like there is a general apathy towards the games.

Let's get things straight.  I am in my early forties & I won't see another Olympics in this country in my lifetime.  Think about that fact for a minute & then focus on the fact it might be my 7 year old sons only chance to go to an Olympiad.  We are talking about a once in a lifetime occurence here & in an age where 'bucket lists' are all the rage, surely this should be on everyones bucket list.

I have tickets for myself, my wife & my son.  people have told me I am lucky but I didn't get them through luck.  I got them through persistence, early starts & lateral thinking.  Of course, you could call me lucky if I had got tickets to the 100m final but that was always going to be a lottery so we set our sights a little lower.  I think that olympics are defined by athletics so we targheted a morning session in the Olympic stadium when no finals or medals were being contested & womens basketball in the afternoon.  The strategy worked & I am now counting the days till we go.

As far as relevance to this area, two local athletes will be in contention for medals, jody Cundy in the Paralympic cycling is a hot favourite for gold & Louise Hazell is competing in the heptathlon.

Let's get behind the Olympics & show why we are GREAT Britain

I agree that it's too easy to be cynical about these thngs and Jody Cundy this week talked about how he hopes to inspire people with his Paralympic bid so c'mon Wisbech, let's get behind him. It was Jody Cundy who inspired injured soldier Terry Byrne to join Great Britain's para-cycling squad and now the swimmer-turned-cyclist hopes the London 2012 Paralympic Games will encourage more people to make the most of their abilities. "I think the Paralympics will inspire a whole generation,"
